The 2nd Annual Los Altos 5k Walk/Run Raises Funds and Awareness for Foster Youth

Friday, May 25, 2018

When Los Altos resident and Child Advocates board member Debbie Crouse sets her mind to something, she’s unstoppable. And that’s a good thing for Child Advocates.

Shortly after joining the board, Debbie conceived of a community event that would be a fun, outdoor activity, and help raise awareness and funds for foster children in our community.

She enlisted the help of her friends who had a passion for running and launched “The Flower Run,” an annual Walk/Run in Los Altos Hills to benefit foster youth in Santa Clara County.  Last year, the inaugural event raised nearly $5,000 and had about 100 attendees. This year’s event, presented by El Camino Hospital, was a huge success, bringing in more than $15,000 with 159 participants and 50 volunteers.

“The big goal was to raise awareness in our community about Child Advocates’ mission and how the agency makes a real difference in the lives of foster children with its Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program,” Debbie explains.

Debbie decided to hold the Flower Run in May because May is National Foster Care Awareness Month and May is a time of year when spring flowers begin blooming.

“We thought that flowers were symbolic of spring and growth,” Debbie explains. As participants crossed the finish line, they were handed flowers. Many participants also wore leis, flower tutus, and flower crowns to celebrate the flower theme.

“I loved that everybody stayed after the race, and they were genuinely interested in learning about Child Advocates,” Debbie says.

With another year on the books, the Flower Run brought fun, funds, and awareness to the Los Altos Hills community. Thank you Debbie and all of the participants and sponsors for a great event!
